Producer’s corner case study for jazz artists who want real ensemble feel

The Brief

Arrangement First
Our producer and arranger listened to the demo and drafted an arrangement with:
- Drums, double bass, piano, guitar
- Strings and French horns
- A featured trumpet solo
We sent Don an arrangement preview covering verse and chorus. This preview step is standard in our process, so we can confirm the direction before tracking.
Client input: Don loved the direction but asked for a saxophone instead of trumpet, and suggested sax plus piano interplay throughout the song. He also shared a custom intro idea.
Producer note: to avoid crowding the texture, our arranger recommended keeping sax as the solo feature and not doubling sax with piano through the full arrangement. Don agreed, based on strong results in our past work together.
We incorporated his intro and notes, then sent a full arrangement preview for approval. Green light given.
Live Recording With A-List Players
Don wanted the same players from his previous session. We booked:
- Drums, upright bass, piano, guitar
- Saxophone, French horns, string quartet
- Lead vocal
Top New York jazz musicians tracked the parts. Before vocals, we delivered instrumentals for approval. Don requested no changes.
Vocal Casting
The right voice is everything in vocal jazz. We proposed Benny, known in New York as a young Sinatra. He loved the song, brought tasteful phrasing and control, and Don gave him room to interpret.
Result: Don approved the performance with no revisions. Don’s father, who wrote the original song, was thrilled with how it came to life. Big moment for everyone involved.
As we thought, Don loved the tracks and requested no modifications.
Mix and Master
We had already produced a song in a similar style for Don, so the target sound was clear. We leaned on analog outboard for warmth and depth, shaped transients for a natural ensemble feel, and balanced the vocal to sit confidently above the band. After a couple of feedback rounds, the mix was locked and the master delivered.
